hkusua inbox, sitting in your gmail!
if you have gmail and you study at hku, then you'll be glad to know that there is a way to avoid the trouble of logging into your gmail AND your hkusua account every day.
the result is what you see below: a button will be added to your gmail account, clicking upon which will display the emails from your hkusua account :)
this is what happens after you click on the "hkusua inbox" button:
here are the steps on how to do it:
to get started, you will need
1/ firefox
2/ greasemonkey extension for firefox
how to add a second inbox
1/ install the greasemonkey script for adding a second inbox written by Tyler Hall
2/ open the script and customize it to your needs (to do so, right-click the greasemonkey icon, choose "work buttons" on the list, and click "edit"). once there, you can change the two variables as highlighted below:
LabelName = "hkusua"; // This is the label you assign to your work emails
MyEmail = "xxx@hkusua.hku.hk"; // Your work email address
remember to save the script before closing!
3/ lastly, change your hkusua account settings here to forward all emails to your gmail account . . and you're done!
more tips:
to avoid cluttering your inbox with spams (i.e. those annoying club notices and promotions) this is what you can do --
1/ in your gmail account, go to "Settings" --> "Filters" --> "Create a new filter"
2/ enter your hkusua email address in the "From:" field, and click "Next Step"
3/ check the box that says "Skip the Inbox" and click "Create Filter"
and lastly...
don't forget to send an email to your hkusua email address to see if it works!
plus, apart from hkusua, this tutorial also applies to and is best for any email accounts that only offer a forwarding function but not pop3 access. if your other email account has pop3 access, you can simply "Add another mail account" in gmail's account settings to import emails. the downside of doing so, however, is that there's no way of separating your imported emails from your other emails, unless you label them and scroll down everytime to find the correct label, or do a search of some sort.
as for the option to add more inboxes, that will be something left to the greasemonkey programmers to work on :P

this is really useful!! thanks!!
i thought this would be too troublesome for anyone to actually do it....haha =p
I am also curious how u get ur inbox to show the attachment file type icon >
horhor, i did it by using ANOTHER greasemonkey script :P
you can get the script here:
http://blog.yoren.info/2007/01/11/431/
Can i use it for my yahoo account?
you can, you just have to change the settings on forwarding accordingly =p
What I've been doing is simply forward them and get Gmail to tag all messages addressed to 'mail.service@uis.hku.hk' and archive them (thus skipping my inbox) - works well, too!
Now, to work up the motivation to actually wade through all the spam that ends up there...that's a more difficult problem to solve. ;)
